Filters allow you to include or exclude files and directories from your backup and restore jobs, as well as any copy, count, or purge jobs. For example, you could create a filter to back up only those files that were modified on or after a certain date. Or you could create a filter to exclude a particular directory from being restored. Use these filters to create custom jobs that contain only the data that you want.
For backup and count jobs, filtering can be performed on a per-machine basis. This means you can include a directory from one machine and exclude the same directory from another machine.
If Node level filters and job level (global) filters are specified in a job, the Node level filters are used.
Note: If you do not specify any filters for a job, Arcserve Backup includes all files that are on the selected source.
Include versus Exclude
The first step in creating a filter is to specify whether you want to include or exclude the files that match the filter criteria.
Exclusions always take precedence over inclusions. For example, if you add a File Pattern filter to include only files that have a .exe extension, and you add a Directory filter to exclude your \system32 directory, all .exe files in the \system32 directory will be excluded.
Specifying to "Include" files results in a backup or restore containing only those files that satisfy the filter specifications. Everything else, unless specifically included, is excluded.
For example, suppose in the source area you selected to back up your entire local hard drive, and then set up a Directory filter to include files in the \system32 directory. The result would be that Arcserve Backup would only back up files from your \system32 directory. No other files would be backed up.
Available Filters
You have the option of including and excluding files based on the following criteria:
