Arcserve Backup uses media groups to organize the media used for backing up and restoring files. Since you can have up to fifteen storage devices connected to a SCSI bus on a board in your machine, Arcserve Backup allows you to separate these storage devices into groups. Grouping devices allows you to take advantage of parallel streaming. And, if you have several devices in a group, you can take advantage of "automated" media spanning. You can also configure library groups.
Grouping Multiple Devices in One Group
If you want to have several devices in a group, there is only one rule: each device in the group must be identical (same brand and model). When you install Arcserve Backup, each storage device that you have is automatically placed in a media group. Identical drives are grouped together and differing drives are separated into different groups. For example, if you have five drives attached to your machine, three of which are identical, you will have three groups: GROUP0, GROUP1, and GROUP2. The three identical drives will be in one group and the remaining two, since they are different from all others, are each placed in their own individual group.
Since Arcserve Backup automatically groups your storage devices every time the Tape engine starts, you can keep these media group names or you can regroup and rename them.
