The bar code feature allows the library to quickly recognize and differentiate one media from the next. Bar code recognition is a library-specific feature. Each media comes, from its manufacturer, with a bar code label affixed to the outer edge of the media cartridge. This label has a predefined serial number using bar codes.
Each media you load into the storage drives of a single library must have a unique serial bar code number. If you happen to purchase two media with the same serial number, put one of the duplicates aside for another backup session. Arcserve Backup automatically detects if the library supports bar code and enables the Bar code Support check box in the Properties window of Device Configuration.
