Backup Local Option Dialog

The Local Options dialog allows you to select a verification option for a particular volume on your computer. You can also set compression and encryption settings for backups performed on the selected volume. These options override the options set through the Global Options dialog.

Backup Verification Options

The Backup Verification options enable you to verify that your data was backed up correctly. The following options are available.

• None--The backup is not verified.
• Scan Backup Media Contents--Checks the header of each file on the backup media. If the header is readable, Arcserve Backup assumes the data is reliable. If the header is not readable, the Activity Log is updated with this information.

  Note: Of the two verification methods, this one is faster.

• Compare Backup Media to Disk--Reads blocks of data from the media and compares the data, byte for byte, against the source files on the source machine. This option is very time consuming, but it ensures that all the data on the media is exactly as it is on disk. If Arcserve Backup finds a mismatch, the Activity Log is updated with this information.

Session/Encryption Password Option

Use this option to specify a password to protect the data.

• Session/Encryption Password--Specify a password to protect the data backed up from this volume. The Session/Encryption Password is the encryption key that allows you to unlock your backed up data and restore it. If you are not encrypting your data, the password is optional.

Important! It is important that you remember the Session/Encryption password to restore this session. There is no way to reset this password.

Compression/Encryption Options

Use these options to specify whether files should be compressed or encrypted before they are backed up.

• Compress Files Before Backup Using Software Compression--Specify whether the files are compressed before backup using software compression. This option enables Arcserve Backup to compress files using software compression algorithm before backup. Since most tape devices already provide hardware compression, you may use this option only if hardware compression is not available. Enabling both hardware and software compression is unnecessary, and if both are selected, software compression will be automatically disabled when the job is run.
• Encrypt Files Before Backup--Specify whether the files should be encrypted before they are backed up.

Important! Arcserve Backup performs local compression and encryption at the agent system. When you specify local compression and encryption and ARCserve server-based compression and encryption (global option), Arcserve Backup performs the compression and encryption at the agent system.

Volume Options

Note: This option is available for NetWare servers only.

• Disable Snapshot--If Arcserve Backup Agent for Open Files is installed on the server and you want to disable open file backup on an NSS volume, select this option.
