Device Group Configuration

Device Group Configuration is an application that you can use to configure device groups and file system device groups.

Using Device Group Configuration you can:

To start Device Group Configuration, select Device Group Configuration from the Configuration menu on the Arcserve Backup home page. After the Welcome to Device Group Configuration dialog opens, follow the on-screen instructions to configure the device groups in your environment.

Arcserve Backup uses "device groups."

Arcserve Backup provides the concept of "device groups". Arcserve Backup allows you to separate your storage devices into groups. Grouping devices allows you to take advantage of parallel streaming. And, if you have several devices in a group, you can also take advantage of "automated" media spanning.

One rule for grouping multiple devices in a group.

Note: If you want to have several devices in a group, each device in the group must be the same make and model.

When the Arcserve Backup Tape Engine starts, each storage device that you have is automatically placed in a device group. Identical drives are grouped together and differing drives are separated into different groups. For example, if you have five drives attached to your machine, three of which are identical, you will have three groups: GROUP0, GROUP1, and GROUP2. The three identical drives will be in one group and the remaining two, since they are different from all others, are each placed in their own individual group.

Since Arcserve Backup automatically groups your storage devices, you can keep these device group names or you can regroup and rename them. After you start Arcserve Backup, you can use the Device Manager and the instructions accessed by clicking the How to button in this topic to configure your device groups.
