Reason:

This error occurs under the following conditions:

• The VSS service on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server is not running on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server.
• The VSS writer on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server is in an unstable state.
• The VSS writer on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server is being used by other applications to create shadow copies.

Action:

To remedy these problems, do the following:

• Verify that the VSS writer on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server started properly.
• Verify that all system state writers on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server are in a stable state using the vssadmin command.
• Verify that there are no other applications using the VSS writer on the Arcserve UDP/D2D server. Arcserve Backup must have exclusive access to the VSS writer to perform backup operations with the Arcserve UDP/D2D server.
• Review the Event Log for VSS-related error messages.
