Use Rotation Scheme Options
This section describes how to configure a rotation scheme for a backup job by using the Arcserve Backup default GFS scheme or by specifying your own rotation parameters. Arcserve Backup provides the following default schemes, which cannot be modified:
- 5-day weekly incremental backup, full backup on Friday
- 5 day weekly incremental backup, full backup on Friday, with GFS enabled
- 7-day weekly incremental backup, full backup on Sunday
- 7-day weekly incremental backup, full backup on Sunday, with GFS enabled
The basic configuration of a rotation scheme consists in specifying one of the following parameters for a backup on a given calendar day:
- Full backup
- Incremental backup
- Differential backup-Archive Bit
- Differential backup-Modification Date
- No backup
Full backup is self-explanatory. A full backup is performed each time the job is repeated.
An incremental backup backs up only those files that have changed (their archive bit has been set) since the last backup. After each backup, archive bits are reset so that they are not backed up during the next incremental backup job.
With differential backup, the backup is performed daily after one weekly full backup and the following occurs:
- A full backup is made of the job and all archive bits are cleared.
- The next day, the differential Backup back up files that either have their archive bit set or the modification date changed depending on which method is selected. (The archive bit is not reset after the backup.)
- The following day, the differential backup contains all files that have their archive bit set or the modification date changed from the previous two days.
