Configure Arcserve Backup to Generate Arcserve UDP Catalog Files

When Arcserve Backup backs up Arcserve UDP backup sessions, the backup process does not generate catalog files for the Arcserve UDP sessions. The process of generating catalog files is a time consuming task that can increase the time that is required to back up the Arcserve UDP backup sessions (backup window). To help reduce the backup window, (by default) Arcserve Backup does not generate catalog files.

Note: The File System Catalog Generation process is optional and disabled by default on Arcserve UDP 5.0 and later releases.

Arcserve Backup requires catalog files to recover Arcserve UDP backup sessions at file level, folder level, and application level granularity. When you need to recover Arcserve UDP backup sessions at file level, folder level, and application level granularity, you can configure Arcserve Backup to generate the catalog files for the Arcserve UDP backup sessions during the backup operation.

The following steps describe how to configure Arcserve Backup to generate and to not generate catalog files during backup operations.

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point Server and open Windows Registry Editor.

Important! Log in to the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point Server when you back up the node using the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point Servers object in the Backup Manager Source tree.

Note: Using the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point Server to perform a backup on a Arcserve UDP node, supports generating catalog files, only if the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point Server is available. If the Arcserve UDP Recovery Point Server is not available, then generating the catalog file fails.

  2. Browse to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\CA ARCServe Backup\ClientAgent\Parameters\GenerateCatalog

  3. Define the key value of GenerateCatalog of REG_DWORD type as one of the following:
  4. Close Windows Registry Editor.
