Shared Tape Volumes in a SAN

In a SAN, each CA ARCserve Backup server connects directly to a SAN, which, in turn, connects to at least one tape drive in the StorageTek ACSLS tape library. In configurations with multiple CA ARCserve Backup servers in a SAN, each backup server is configured to control and share the same set of tape drives and tape volumes in the StorageTek ACSLS tape library. As a result, each CA ARCserve Backup server in the SAN shares the same user-defined subset of tape volumes on the StorageTek ACSLS tape library.

In a SAN, the CA ARCserve Backup servers have the same virtual library configuration, the same tape volume configuration, and the same tape drive configuration.

The Enterprise Option for StorageTek ACSLS must reside on each CA ARCserve Backup server in the SAN. The following illustration shows the option architecture in a SAN and the SAN communication interface to the StorageTek ACSLS tape library:
