一般說來，生產伺服器會使用某種層級的磁碟儲存容錯來保護重要資料。容錯能力可以透過磁碟鏡像或 RAID 等量分割層級來提供。使用可傳輸的陰影複製並不影響容錯層級。完整容錯的生產資料維持在配置的 LUN 上，而陰影複製則複製到另一個可傳輸的 LUN 上。

進行備份作業時，Arcserve Backup (要求者) 連絡生產伺服器上的 VSS，並通知其開始進行可傳輸陰影複製的程序。VSS 會告訴編寫器準備陰影複製的資料。
編寫器完成準備資料以後，VSS 會指示提供者將含有可傳輸陰影複製的磁碟區與生產伺服器分離，並在備份伺服器上顯示此磁碟區。

Arcserve Backup 然後就能在不影響生產伺服器的情況下執行陰影複製的備份。
備份完成後，提供者中斷備份伺服器與可傳輸磁碟區的連線，並將磁碟區與生產伺服器重新同步，以為下次備份做準備。
