Back up Data with the Windows Client Agent

Adding the client

To add the client to the machine tree in Arcserve Backup, perform the following procedure:

  1. Open the Backup Manager and select the Source tab.
  2. In the tree, right-click the Windows Systems item and select Add Machine/Object from the pop-up menu.
  3. The Add Agent dialog opens.

For specific instructions on how to add the computer as a client agent, click the Help button on the Add Agent dialog.

  4. After you have entered the required information, click Add.

The client machine is added to the machine tree.

After the client has been successfully added to the machine tree, you can back up and restore the client like any other machine.

Selecting the Agent option

To select the Agent option, perform the following procedure:

  1. Open the Backup window in the Backup Manager.
  2. In the machine tree Browser, expand the Network or Preferred Shares\Machines tree until you have located the client machine.
  3. Right-click the client.

    A pop-up menu opens.

  4. Select Use Agent from the pop-up menu.

    The Agent Information dialog opens.

Note: Arcserve Backup does not support logging in to systems with passwords that are greater than 23 characters. If the password on the system you are attempting to log in to is greater than 23 characters, you must modify the password on the agent system such that it is 23 characters or less, and then you can log in to the agent system.

The Client Agent is configured for use.

After the agent has been selected for use, you can back up and restore the client like any other machine. See the Administration Guide for information on backing up and restoring using Arcserve Backup.

Dynamic Host Configuration

The Arcserve Backup Manager supports a location method that can recognize a remote Windows client agent host based on the machine name for the host only.

To take advantage of this feature, select the Use Computer Name Resolution check box in the Add Object dialog or the Modify Object dialog. Arcserve Backup locates the machine based on the Host Name only.
