Configure Virtual Machine(s) Settings
This section provides information about how to configure virtual machine settings for creating instant VM.
The Virtual Machine(s) Settings screen displays individual sections for each selected node with the configuration details. On each section, you can provide the details as needed to create the instant VM.
Follow these steps:
- From the Virtual Machine(s) Settings screen, click the VM node you want to configure.
- On the selected VM node, perform the following:
- For VM Name, type the name of the Instant VM. The name of the source node with a prefix is the default name of the Instant VM.
- (Optional) For Description, type the description as needed for the Instant VM.
- For VM Files Folder, click the Browse button to select the location of the folder on the recovery server for the Instant VM. You can also create a new folder from the VM Files Folder dialog.
- Note: The VM Files Folder option is only available for Windows VM nodes. For Linux VM node, you can select the available datastore from the VM Files datastore drop-down list.
- For CPU Count, select the number of CPUs for the Instant VM.
- For Memory Size, type the memory size for the Instant VM.
- Note: You can also use the slider to provide the memory size for the Instant VM.
- For Network Adapters, do the following:
- On the Network Adapter section, click Add an Adapter.
- The Add Network Adapter dialog appears.
- On the Add Network Adapter dialog, provide the following details, and then click OK.
- Virtual Network: From the Virtual Network drop-down, select the required virtual network.
- Adapter Type: From the Adapter Type drop-down, select the type of the Adapter.
- TCP/IP Settings: From the TCP/IP Settings drop-down, select Source (Automatic) or Custom IP/Gateway/DNS/WINS Settings as needed.
- Note: If you select the Custom IP/Gateway/DNS/WINS Settings option, click Add an Address to provide the TCP/IP details manually.
- On the Network Adapter section, click Update DNS.
- To add a DNS update record, click Add a DNS Address.
- Notes:
- You can remove the DNS update record. To remove, click Remove.
- To adjust the sequence of the records, click the Up and Down button.
- Select a DNS Address and an IP Address from the drop-down list, and then click OK.
- Specify the Time to Live (TTL).
- Specify the DNS Authentication.
- For Microsoft DNS Server, enter the username and password. For Bind Server, you need to specify the full path, including the file name of the key file in the Recovery Server.
- For Advance settings, do the following:
- Verify the free disk space of the VM Files Folder capacity.
- Note: The Monitor free disk space of VM Files Folder capacity check box is selected by default. The capacity bar appears in yellow in the Instant Virtual Machines page if the free space of the VM Files Folder capacity is lesser than the threshold value. The default threshold value is 3%. You may change the value as needed.
- Select the Specify disk controller type for the virtual machine check box, and then from the drop-down, select the type of the disk controller for the virtual machine.
- Note: The Specify disk controller type for the virtual machine check box is available if you have selected VMware vSphere as the VM location. The instant virtual machine is created applying the specified disk controller in the VMware.
- To redirect the virtual disk updates to the VMware Datastore, follow these steps:
- Select the Redirect virtual disk updates to VMware Datastore check box.
- Note: The Redirect virtual disk updates to VMware Datastore check box is only available when you select VMware vSphere as VM location.
- From the drop-down, select the required VMware Datastore.
- The updates of the virtual disk are redirected to the selected VMware datastore.
- To change the Instant Virtual Machine hostname, follow these steps:
- Click the Change Host Name check box.
- The screen refreshes with the new fields.
- In the New Host Name field, type the new host name as needed.
- If the source machine is in a domain, provide the following details as needed:
- User Account: Type the user account.
- Password: Type the password.
- Confirm Password: Type the password again to confirm.
- Note: If the source machine is in a domain, you must have the account permissions to change the hostname in domain.
- (Optional) For Linux Instant VM, select the Recover data automatically after Instant VM is started check box to enable the automatic recovery of data when the instant VM target is started.
- The default behaviour of Linux Instant VM is to recover the necessary data first and start the VM. If the option is not selected, then when the VM starts the remaining data is not recovered even if used a normal VM. If the option is enabled, the remaining data is recovered at the backend when you are using the VM. You can also preserve the Instant VM target permanently when the data recovery is finished.
- Note: When status of the Linux Instant VM target is Power Off, Instant VM job fails. If that recovery point is merged, the Linux Instant VM fails to Power ON.
- Click Next.
- The Summary screen appears.
You can add multiple network adapters. After adding a network adapter, you can edit and delete the network adapter from the Actions column.
Note: For a Linux Instant VM, you can use at least one virtual NIC to connect to the Linux Backup Server.
To add a network adapter, follow these steps:
The Network Adapter is added.
If you already have provided an IP address and DNS address in the Network Adapter and source machine of a domain, you can update the DNS using the following steps:
Note: This feature is only available for Windows Instant VM.
