Running a Full Backup (Clear Archive Bit) or Incremental Backup on a Source Previously Backed Up in a SFB Job Causes Data Loss

Valid on Windows platforms.

Symptom

Running a Full backup (Clear archive bit) or Incremental Backup to back up a source that was backed up in a synthetic full backup job causes data loss.

This occurs when you submit a backup job with Synthetic backup enabled and select folders and files as the backup source. If the data changes in that backup source and you submit a Normal full backup (Clear archive bit) or Incremental Backup on this source prior to the next scheduled synthetic full backup job, the changed data is missed in the next point-in-time incremental backup because the archive bit is cleared for the changed files in the folder. This ultimately causes the changed files to be missed in the next synthetic full backup session. Arcserve Backup provides one warning message: W29893 Missed file XXX , the file may be backed up by another job. Arcserve Backup will do a real full backup on the next synthetic day.

Solution

If you want to submit a Normal full backup job to back up the same source as the synthetic full backup job, it is recommended that you use a Normal full (Keep archive bit) backup job.
