A stopped engine is an engine that is completely offline. This may be caused by errors, manual shutdown, or a new installation. Whatever the reason, it means that the services of that engine are not available.
The Arcserve Backup engines are designed to run independently of each other. For example, if you stop the Tape Engine, the Database Engine and the Job Engine are not affected. They continue to run, performing their services as configured. The Database Engine continues to log pertinent Arcserve Backup information in the database, and the Job Engine continues to scan the job queue and start jobs as required. If a job requires a storage device, the Job Engine launches the job, but the job fails because the Tape Engine is not able to communicate with the storage device. The Database Engine then logs this information.
Note: Although Arcserve Backup still functions if one or two engines are not running, Arcserve Backup needs all three engines running simultaneously to achieve complete functionality.
